Primary forest in Romania

Primary forest in Romania?

Magical forests

"Jungle" in Europe?

Many people tend to think of ‘jungle’ or ‘Amazon rainforest’ when they hear the term ‘primary’ or ‘virgin’ forest ...
The fact that there are still significant tracks of primary and old growth forests in Europe comes as a surprise to many.

But yes. There is still ancient forest wilderness in Europe!

6,000 years ago, Europe was largely covered by large, wild forests that developed largely undisturbed by humans: Huge beech and mixed deciduous forests covered the southern flanks of the mountains and stretched to the horizon in the lowlands and hills. Seemingly endless coniferous forests grew on the northern parts of the mountains and the far north. (Large) herbivores grazed in openings.

In the last millennium, however, Europe was almost completely and profoundly changed and shaped by humans: A cultivated and industrialized landscape gradually replaced the former evolutionary and pristine natural landscapes. Only a small part of Europe is still in a near-natural state today. And these natural paradises are also vanishing.

Romania is home to the largest tracks of primary and old growth forests in the European Union outside of Scandinavia. But only a part of them is safely protected and logging in the other - not sufficiently protected - natural forest areas is leading to the rapid disappearance of this natural treasure. Scientists and conservationists are working hard to protect them. However, more momentum and awareness would help with conservation efforts.

We are convinced that the development of “forest wilderness tourism” could create economic incentives and alternatives to logging. This could potentially motivate people of Romania to support better protection of "their" forest paradises.

However, the primary forests in Romania have so far hardly been an important factor for international Romania tourism and have not yet appeared explicitly in the offers of international tour operators.

We want to change that.

That is why we would like to inform you about the exceptional value of these forests for all of us, where you can experience fantastic wild forests (safely and without harming nature) and how you can get there...
